Information for Sophomores
The junior year will be here before you know it and sophomores should spend the summer between the sophomore and junior year exploring post-secondary options. For those who plan to attend college, this summer is the time to arrange college visits. Getting on campus, touring the buildings, meeting with admissions and financial aid are all important pieces of the college visit. For help in arranging visits, please see Mrs. Ahearn. She is happy to walk you through the steps. You can find a list of questions to ask on a college visit on the bulletin board. Students should pick up a copy of this and take with them for the visit. These questions will help guide you as you decide which colleges might be a good fit.
Many juniors like to job shadow in one or more areas of interest. Sophomores will be juniors before they know it, and it’s important to begin narrowing the post-secondary plans. Mrs. Ahearn can help sophomores arrange job shadowing experiences for the summer between the sophomore and junior years. If interested in a particular career field and you would like to see if a job shadowing experience is possible, please contact Mrs. Ahearn.
Military Interest for Sophomores – There are multiple ways to join the military, did you know that? Most students enlist upon high school graduation, but some choose to defer their enlistment and attend college first. These students are then commissioned at college graduation to enter the military as an officer in a leadership position.
Some students seek to attend one of the military academies for their college choice. This decision must be made earlier than the traditional college decisions, as the easiest way to attend a military academy is through a legislative appointment. This appointment requires a high gpa and test score, as well as a lot of paperwork, including an application sent to your local legislative office, and this paperwork is often due during the junior year. For more information on applying to attend an academy, please see Mrs. Ahearn.
Students who are interested in enlisting upon high school graduation would work with a military recruiter during the junior and/or senior years to prepare for enlistment. For more information about enlistment, Mrs. Ahearn can allow students who are juniors or seniors to talk with a recruiter. For more general information about joining the military, please see Mrs. Ahearn.
