FAFSA | Posted 1/31/24
Mrs. McAnally received word from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission on 1/31/24 that the federal government will not be able to process FAFSAs and send results to colleges until March. This was originally supposed to occur by January 31. Colleges should understand students cannot provide an SAI for scholarships. Mrs. McAnally expects financial aid packages to come out late because of this. Many families are seeing “in review” on the parent side of the FAFSA and students are receiving emails stating parents have not signed their portion of the FAFSA. There are several glitches and once the federal government works through these glitches, FAFSAs should show the parent did sign and the FAFSA should process. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the financial aid office at the college your student plans to attend.

Seniors: This is just a reminder that the Community Foundation Scholarship is due January 31 by 4:00 p.m. This is a great scholarship to apply for, as it's one application for over 300 scholarships. While you can only receive one scholarship, your chances of receiving one are really good. If you need help applying, please see Mrs. McAnally. This will take you a good hour of your time, so please do not wait until the last minute! You must have time to get recommendations from adults, so the time to fill this out is now! Need the website? It's on Mrs. McAnally's bulletin board.

Scholarships in Xello | Posted 2/9/23
Mrs. McAnally and Mrs. Nuzzo are continually adding scholarships to Xello, and advertising them on the announcements at school. Students should continually check the Xello file to stay aware of the new scholarship opportunities. Students who would like assistance in filling out scholarship forms should make an appointment with Mrs. McAnally. She is happy to walk students through the process for each scholarship, proof scholarships before submission, and proof essays. Students should always have at least two adults who are good at proofreading to proof scholarship applications and essays before submitting. Students who do not follow the directions given, do not provide all the necessary documents, or provide too many documents, will be disqualified from most scholarships, so it’s very important for students to take the time to have someone else look over their work.

KILTS Foundation Scholarship | Posted 2/4/22
The KILTS Foundation Scholarship is now available in Mrs. McAnally’s office. This is a paper scholarship with many parts. It is due back to Mrs. McAnally by March 7th. There are no exceptions! Mrs. McAnally will hold an SRT meeting shortly to hand out the scholarship application packets and to explain the various components. This is an excellent scholarship to apply for. Students who receive a KILTS Foundation Scholarship can continue to receive the scholarship each year they are enrolled in college. Most scholarships are only available on a one-time basis during the freshman year, but because the KILTS Scholarship is renewable for four or more years, the student can depend on the amount every year, making this a great scholarship to apply for. For questions or more information on the KILTS Foundation Scholarship, please contact Mrs. McAnally.

Joliet Junior College Scholarships
Students planning to attend JJC for the Fall can apply for scholarships specific to attending JJC beginning in February, including the JJC Foundation Scholarship for Newark High School students. The Foundation Scholarship provides one Newark student with $3,200 per year. The scholarship application is one online application and the program will automatically help the student apply for all eligible scholarships with this one application. This is a great way for our students to pay for college. Seniors should add this to their agenda/calendar so that they can remember to fill out the scholarship application at the beginning of February. The link to apply is https://www.jjc.edu/getting-started/pay-college/scholarships.

Scholarship Tips and Pitfalls to Avoid:
  1. Apply well before the deadline.
  2. Only apply if you meet the minimum qualifications.
  3. Read the entire application carefully before beginning.
  4. If you must fill out the form by hand, use blue or black ink (not both), and print neatly.
  5. Request transcripts and recommendation letters early. You are not the only one requesting these documents. Allow plenty of time for completion.
  6. Read essay prompts carefully, and regularly review the prompt to make sure you are covering everything asked for.
  7. Have someone else proof your application and essay.
  8. Double-check to make sure everything is included before mailing the application.
  9. Use a large envelope (9x12) to mail the application instead of trying to cram all the contents into a letter envelope.
  10. Double-check the postage to make sure you have enough.
  11. Double-check the deadline. Does the application need to be postmarked by a certain date or received by a certain date? Give yourself enough time to meet the deadline.
