Summer Isn't Just for Relaxing for Rising Seniors
Attention Juniors, you will soon be a senior and the year will go by like lightning! You need to be prepared!! As we discussed this spring, you need to spend the summer thinking about your future after graduation and researching your options. Many college campuses are beginning to open back up, as well as union halls.
It is very important that you spend the summer looking at colleges, visiting when you can, and making sure the college not only offers what you are interested in majoring in, but also is a good overall fit. Call and make individual appointments for you and a parent to visit over the summer. College applications will be do quickly in the fall, so you must be ready. If you need to retake the SAT or take the ACT, please remember to register for those early fall dates in early July. If you need help, ask Mrs. Ahearn.
If you plan to work after high school, are you considering the union? If so, many union halls are opening back up. Call and make an appointment to talk with someone and take a tour to learn all the locals have to offer. You won’t be disappointed!! If you aren’t considering the union, but are considering full-time employment, summer is a great time to find employment and get your foot in the door with a part-time job.
Considering the military? Now is the time to begin talking with recruiters to decide which branch of military you are interested in. Spend the summer working out so you can pass the physical agility test, and practice for taking the ASVAB test (think SAT for the military). Mrs. McAnally has some books you can borrow to practice for the test, and so does the recruiter. The recruiter will let you take a practice test to see where your current scores lie so you can learn what you need to do to reach your goals and obtain the type of military position you would like to do as a career. Questions? Mrs. Ahearn can help you get in touch with a recruiter.
Summer College Classes
Would you like to take a summer college course for dual credit? Colleges are still offering this opportunity, but most will require you to attend class online and you must have adequate internet capability to attend the class. In order to attend class while in high school, you must first meet the criteria and then fill out paperwork through Mrs. McAnally’s office. Please contact Mrs. Ahearn and she will walk you through the steps to apply and register. You must receive permission before registering, so please make sure you are in communication with Mrs. McAnally about what you want to do. You must be 16 in order to register for a summer college course, and may need to take placement exams if the course requires proof of reading or math abilities.
College Courses
If you are going to be a junior or senior and would like to take a college course over the summer, please contact Mrs. Ahearn for the proper steps to enroll as a high school student in a college course. The local community colleges require you to receive permission from your home school before registering for a college course, and there is special paperwork that must be completed if you are a high school student. There are also special guidelines that must be followed as set forth by the NCHS Board of Education. For more information, please refer to your school handbook or call the counseling office.
